The Integrated theater command of the Indian Army:
The concept of an integrated theatre command was pioneered by the United States military in the year 1947. The United States set up five geographic tri-service commands to cover the globe. It now has 11 unified commands with the four geographic ones being Africa, Central, European, Indo-Pacific, Northern, Southern, and Space. Its functional commands include Cyber, Special Operations, Transportation, and Strategic.
Recently India appointed General Bipin Rawat as India’s first-ever Chief of Defense Staff whose responsibility it is to act as the principal point of contact between the tri-services and the executive leadership of the country. With the growing threats at the Indo-Pakistan and Indo-China border, the establishment of tri-service commands or Integrated theater Command may come with numerous advantages. However, both Gen Navarone and Gen Rawat have insisted that the Indian Armed Forces will not look to copy any other nation’s model and create its own structure.
What is Integrated Theater Command:
An integrated theatre command is one that enables the pooling of resources of all three services under a single commander, towards securing a particular geographical area. A commander of an integrated theater command will have the resources of the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force in managing a national security threat over a particular geographical area. The commander can also carry out joint training while benefitting from the logistics of all three services.
