How foreign candidates are trained at IMA?

Foreign candidates are trained at IMA:-The Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun is one of the premier Institutions training Gentlemen Cadets (GCs) for commission into the Indian Army. The Academy is known for its glorious history and valiant traditions which are not only an integral part of the Nation‟s proud heritage, but also form an indispensable sheet anchor of independent India‟s national security.

These young men come from different backgrounds, cultures and geographies to include from ‘Friendly foreign countries’ and together they go through the rigours of training, creating bonds of a lifetime.

Why India trained foreign candidates at IMA?

It is India’s goodwill sign that we give training to foreign soldiers. We always believe in friendly relations with the other country, it’s our goodwill sign to provide best training facility to the foreign candidates who want to join the Armed forces. Those country does not have many facilities to train their soldiers are always welcome in India. Currently, we are giving training to more than 50 country’s gentlemen cadets at IMA and OTA.

Aim of Training at IMA for all candidates:-

The training at IMA is aimed at the optimum development of intellectual, moral and physical qualities essential for leadership in the profession of arms. Training at the IMA inculcates those qualities of mind and heart, patriotism, character, dynamism, initiative and understanding that are the very basis of leadership in war as well as in peace.

Is it Good for India or Not?

It is a question now a day because some countries from where the Gentlemen Cadets (GCs) come to the IMA may not remain friendly during the course of the training and hence the requirement to appreciate what will happen to such GCs. The case in point is Afghanistan.

What is going to be the future of such GCs in their country after completion of their training at IMA and will they be even allowed to return to their own country? What will be their psychological condition as they continue their training, quite unsure of their future, limited if any information about their families and friends back home? What is India’s response to such questions and what are the next steps to be taken by the authorities at IMA?

While some steps may have been initiated to address these issues yet I was wondering if the possibility of approaching ‘Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai’, one of the Taliban’s seven most powerful figures, who was a GC at IMA in 1982. Is there a possibility for India to use such a channel of communication with the new Taliban regime in Afghanistan?
