Combined Defence Service Examination (CDSE) is conducted two times in a year named as CDS(I) and CDS(II) by the UPSC which is Union Public Service Commission for the recruitment of Indian Military Academy (IMA) , Air Force Academy (AFA), Indian Naval Academy (INA) and Officers Training Academy (OTA). Let’s discuss some detail about CDS examination like Qualification, age limit etc.
Qualification required for CDS II examination:-
- You can apply for the CDS examination only after graduation.
- If the candidate is in the final year of his graduation can also apply for this.
- Candidate must have at least 60% marks in his graduation.
See, through CDS examination they recruit the candidate for the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Air Force Academy (AFA), Indian Naval Academy (INA) and Officers Training Academy (OTA) so the educational qualification would be different as per their guidelines. We will discuss each academy’s qualification in detail:-
Indian Military Academy (IMA):-
- Candidate should have a graduation degree in any discipline from any recognized institute.
Indian Air Force Academy (AFA):-
- The candidate should have passed 10+2 with physics and mathematics and have a degree in engineering/technical from any recognized Institute.
Indian Naval Academy (INA):-
- Candidate should have passed 10+2 with physics and mathematics and having a B.E or B.tech degree from any recognized Institute.
Officers Training Academy (OTA):-
- For OTA Candidate should have a graduation degree in any discipline from any recognized Institute.
through the OTA candidate can become an officer in Indian Army for SSC ( Short Service Commission).
Age limit or Age required for CDS examination:-
Age criteria for each academy are different so we will discuss one by one:-
- IMA:- For IMA, candidate age must be between 19-24yrs old.
- AFA:– For AFA, candidate age must be between 19-24yrs old.
- INA:– For INA, candidate age must be between 19-22yrs old.
- OTA:– For OTA, candidates age must be between 19-27yrs old.
Selection Process of CDS:-
- Written exams conducted by UPSC.
- SSB interview.
- Medical exams.
Exam syllabus for CDS examination:-
For IMA, AFA and INA the syllabus is the same but for the OTA it is bit different.
For IMA, INA and AFA syllabus is:-
- English
- General knowledge
- Elementary mathematics

English section is aimed for the testing the basic English skills of the candidate like Synonyms, Antonyms, Reading comprehension, Jumbled sentences, Sentence Correction and Fill in the blanks etc.
General Knowledge requires you to have up-to-date knowledge of Current Affairs, scientific inventions, History, Geography, defence-related news and any other topics of importance.
Elementary mathematics is just basic mathematics up to 10th level were they the sharpness of your mind by giving you tricky questions.

How to prepare for the CDS-II examination
- For English, first, check the English test syllabus.
- To prepare for the English create a habit of reading and improve your vocabulary. You can do it by reading an English newspaper, English article etc.
- Set proper time management for the grammar portion.
- Solve mock test paper and previous year question paper.
- For General knowledge, there is no perfect trick to prepare for this. Just collect information regarding news, international news, defence-related news etc.
- And for the History, civil and geography prepare with the CDS books. Or books of Major Kalshi Classes.
- For elementary mathematics, this is not so tough portion, most of the questions would be tricky like reasoning, just prepare for the reasoning and also solve the math till 10th and take help from the previous year question papers or mock test papers.
