Dam-created reservoirs not only prevent flooding, but also provide water for activities such as irrigation, human consumption, industrial use, aquaculture, and navigation.

Types of Dam:-

Dams are classified into the following types based on their structure:–

Arch Dam:- A concrete dam that is curved upstream in the plan is known as an arch dam. It is designed so that the hydrostatic pressure (the force of water against it) presses against the arch, straightening it slightly and strengthening the structure as it pushes into its foundation or abutments. An arch dam is best suited for narrow canyons or gorges with steep, stable rock walls to support the structure and stresses.

Gravity dams:- These are dams that are made of concrete or stone masonry. They are intended to withstand horizontal water pressure by using only the weight of the material and its resistance to the foundation. These are built so that each section of the dam is stable and independent of the others.

Barrages Dam:- It is a type of low-head diversion dam that consists of a series of large gates that can be opened and closed to control the amount of water passing through. This enables the structure to regulate and stabilise the elevation of river water upstream for use in irrigation and other systems.

India’s Major Dams:-

The major dams in India have aided the people in a variety of ways, including:

1. Providing enough water for domestic, industrial, and irrigation needs.
2. Production of hydroelectric power and river navigation

Tehri Dam

Tehri Dam is in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. With a height of 260.5 metres, it is India’s tallest dam. It is also one of the world’s top ten highest dams. This dam is located on the Bhagirathi River.

3. The reservoir has a capacity of 21,000-acre feet.
4. The installed capacity is 1000 Megawatts.

Bhakra Nangal Dam:-

The Bhakra Nangal Dam is situated in Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. It is the largest dam in India, with a height of 225 metres, and it is also the second-largest dam in Asia. It is located on the Sutlej River.

Hirakud Dam

Hirakud Dam is located in the Indian state of Orissa. With a total length of 25.79 kilometres, it is India’s longest dam. It also ranks among the world’s longest dams. The Hirakud Dam is located on the Mahanadi River.

Sardar Sarovar Dam

Gujarat is the location of the Sardar Sarovar Dam. It is the Narmada Valley Project’s largest dam. This dam will benefit neighbouring states Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra. It is located on the Narmada River.

1. The dam’s height is 163 metres.
2. Dam length is 1210 metres, and the dam type is a gravity dam.
3. The reservoir has a capacity of 770,000 acre-feet.
4. The installed capacity is 1450 Megawatts.
