For Indian Navy, Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) has constructed India’s First Nuclear Missile Tracking Ship – known as VC11184. It is an Ocean Surveillance Ship which is in its final stage of being completed and on its way to the National Technical Research Organization (NTRO). This ship will be the first dedicated resource in Phase-II of India’s ballistic missile defence.
According to the sources, this project has cost around Rs. 1,500 crores and has been designed by Vik Sandvik Design India. India’s First Nuclear Missile Tracking Ship has a displacement of around 10,000 tonnes, length of 175 metre, beam of 22 metre, draught of 6 metre. It can attain a speed of around 21 knots. In addition, it is powered by two imported 9,000 kilowatt combined diesel and diesel CODAD configuration engines as well as three 1200 kilowatt auxiliary generators.
It will be filled with X band (primary) and S band (secondary) active electronically scanned array radar. Moreover, it has a long open deck along with ample space to install multiple missile antennas. This ship will have a crew of around 300 personnel and carry a single helicopter. Additionally, it will also have a special team from National Technical Research Organization on board.
India’s First Nuclear Missile Tracking Ship started harbour trails in the month of July 2018 and was expected to undergo sea trails by the end of the same year.
