SIMBEX stands for Singapore India Maritime Bilateral Exercise. It is an annual bilateral naval exercise conducted by the navy of India and the Republic of Singapore. Since 1994, this exercise has been held annually. Earlier, SIMBEX includes anti-submarine warfare. Over the years, it has progressed a lot. Now, it also includes elements of maritime security, anti-air, and anti-surface warfare.
According to the sources, the Indian Navy and the Republic of Singapore Navy is going to held SIMBEX 2019 on Sunday in the South China Sea. This exercise will run from 16th May to 22nd May 2019. Last year, it took place in the Indian Ocean – India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
About SIMBEX 2019
- The Indian Navy has deployed its finest assets Kolkata Class Destroyers, including INS Kolkata and INS Shakti for this exercise.
- The primary objective of this naval exercise is to extend bridges of friendship through maritime, economic, and cultural interactions along with East and South-East Asia (SEA) countries.
SIMBEX 2019 is going to be conducted in two phases, including:
Harbour Phase: This phase will be conducted from 16th May to 18th May 2019. Here, SIMBEX exercise will include various planning conferences, simulator-based warfare training, and courtesy calls to dignitaries of RS Navy, deck reception, and sporting events all onboard INS Kolkata.
Sea Phase: On the other hand, Sea Phase will be conducted from 19th May to 22nd May 2019 in the South China Sea (SCS). It will include several maritime combat exercises, including advanced aerial tracking, tactical exercises on the surface or air scenarios, firing on aerial or surface targets, and coordinated targeting exercises.
SIMBEX 2019 Participants
INS Shakti, INS Kolkata and Poseidon-81 (P81) are going to participate in this exercise. In addition to this, Singapore side, F-16 fighter aircraft, Fokker-50 (F-50), and Royal Singapore Navy (RSN) Ships RSN Steadfast and RSN Valiant will also participate in SIMBEX 2019.
