What is Project 75 Class Submarine of Indian Navy?

The Defence Acquisition Council of India launched Project 75 Class Submarine to build good conventional submarines for the Indian Navy. Under this project, conventional submarines were to be built in India and approval was given to issue a request for proposal for this construction. A request for proposal is an announced project that can be issued publicly by an organization. Request for Proposal indicates that bids are made by the country’s contractors to complete the project.

About the project 75 Class Submarine:-

Under Project 75, it has been ensured to manufacture conventional submarines equipped with state-of-the-art Air Independent Monitoring System in India at an estimated cost of Rs 43000 crores. Project 75 was approved in the year 2007.Including indigenously building submarines for the Indian Navy. The 30-year plans of the Indian Navy have been included in this project.

This is the first project in India under the Strategic Partnership Model promulgated in the year 2017 to make India’s defence system completely indigenous. The political partnership model allows India’s own domestic manufacturers to work with major foreign defence companies to produce high-end metallic platforms to reduce dependence on imports.

Significance of Project 75:-

  • One of the biggest projects of Make in India.

It will serve to facilitate faster and more significant absorption of technology and create a level-playing industrial ecosystem for submarine manufacturing in India.

  • Ensuring independence:

From a strategic point of view, it will help in reducing the current dependence on imports and gradually ensure greater self-reliance and dependence on supply from indigenous sources.

  • Defence of the Indo-Pacific Region

This change has been made in view of the rapid growth of nuclear submarine arsenal by the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN, China) and to protect the Indo-Pacific from future adversary domination.

  • 30 year submarine building programme:

In June 1999, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) approved a 30-year submarine building plan that included building 24 conventional submarines by 2030.

Under this model, all the tools made for defence will be related to Make in India. It may also refer to the partnership of private Indian firms with foreign original equipment manufacturers.

List of Submarine Under Project 75:-

  • The P75 India succeeds the P75, under which six Kalvari class diesel-electric attack submarines based on the Scorpene class are to be manufactured at Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL).
  • The third submarine, INS Karanj, was commissioned in March 2021 this year.
  • In this episode, now India has also received the fourth submarine, Vela.
  • At present, India has only one nuclear submarine INS Arihant.
  • INS Arighat is also a nuclear powered ballistic missile submarine, to be commissioned soon.
  • INS Chakra (Chakra) is a nuclear submarine leased from Russia. It is believed to be going back to its native country.

Defence Acquisition Council (DAC):-

The DAC is the highest decision-making body in the Ministry of Defence that decides on new policies and capital acquisition for the three services (Army, Navy and Air Force) as well as the Indian Coast Guard. The Defence Minister was the head of the Defence Acquisition Council.

The Defence Acquisition Council was set up in 2001 following the recommendations of the Group of Ministers on “Improving the National Security System” after the 1999 Kargil War.

Submarines in Indian Navy

The Indian Navy has received the gift of the fourth submarine Vela under Project 75. Project 75 comprises a total of six Scorpene-class submarines and all of these submarines are made in India. All the submarines that India has received so far have been built by Mazagon Dock ShivbuildersLimited, Mumbai. It had an agreement with M/s Naval Group in France. The construction of the Vela submarine began on 6 May 2019, after which trials of its port and underwater connectivity were involved.

All this work was done only during the Kovid-19 restrictions, out of which already three submarines are working for the Navy. All these submarines are part of the project of self-reliant India. Soon all submarines under Project 75 will be inducted into India’s fleet. Of these submarines, four submarines or those serving for India are INS Kalvari, Khanderi, Kranj and Vela.
