What is NDA?
National Defence Academy is the Joint Military Academy. Where cadets of three services Indian Army, Indian Air force and Indian Navy are trained. This is the only academy in the world where cadets of all three major services of the nation are trained. The NDA offers only a full-time, residential undergraduate program. Cadets are awarded Degree after 3 years of study. Cadets have a choice of two streams of study. Science stream and Humanities.
Cadets spend the first four semesters on the compulsory subjects and the Foundation courses. They take the Optional Courses during the fifth and sixth semesters. They may transfer to other Service academies for the optional courses.
How can I join NDA?
The eligibility criteria for joining NDA is 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the NDA Exam twice in a year. The candidates who are eligible can apply online. The selection process is based on Written Test & SSB Interview. The details are as follows…
Selection Procedure:
UPSC conducts NDA (National Defence Academy) Exam in two phases:-
- Written exams
- SSB Interview
Written Examination-
The exam will constitute 2 subjects, Maths and General Ability Test and each subject are given the time limit 2 ½ Hours, maximum marks for Maths is 300 & General ability is 600. The papers in all the subjects will consist of objective type questions only. The question papers of Mathematics & Part B of General Ability Test will be set bilingually in Hindi as well as English. The Commission has the discretion to fix qualifying marks in any or all the subjects at the examination.

SSB Interview-
Qualified candidates in the written examination will be called for Interview conducted by SSB (Services selection board). For Army, Navy Wings & 10 +2 Entry Scheme candidates need to undergo Intelligence Test & Personality Test, but for Air Force Wing the candidates must attend a Pilot Aptitude Test. The Interview Consists of both Intelligence & Personality Test.
Intelligence and Personality Test:-
The SSB procedure consists of two-stage Selection process-stage I and stage II. Only those candidates who clear the stage I are permitted to appear for stage II. The details are :
- Stage I comprises of Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) tests are Picture Perception Description Test (PP&DT). The candidates will be shortlisted based on the combination of performance in QIR Test and PP and DT
- Stage II Comprises of Interview, Group Testing Officer Tasks, Psychology Tests and the Conference. These tests are conducted over 4 days.

The lifestyle of cadets at NDA
The NDA campus is located about 17 km south-west of Pune city. It spans 8,022 acres (32.46 km) donated by the Government of the former Bombay State. The dream place for all the aspiring cadets working hard day and night is NATIONAL DEFENCE ACADEMY
Cadets live tremendous life at the campus. Where they transform themselves from boy to men, from men to gentlemen. Usually, they wake up early in the morning before the sunrise and starts their day with the military drill. They do not use their phone while they are in training for 3 years. They are allowed to use sometimes only.
They live a completely different lifestyle. They even get training for eating meals like How to hold a spoon and forks?. They also have to finish their meals in a given time. The first-year cadets of NDA are not allowed to walk in corridors, they have to run.
Don’t get an idea that your daily routine will only include physical training as there are exams also at regular intervals. Then there are other activities like PT, horse riding, basketball, football, hockey, literature, yoga, arts and many others which are divided into two clubs namely, indoor club and outdoor club in which a cadet has to indulge himself.
Discipline and time management are two ways to survive in the academy and these factors will also define you not only during the training period but also when you become an officer.
Life at NDA is very strict as one has to go through tough punishments on being a defaulter so one has to follow every rule. Cadets learn to build confidence, how to work under pressure, to be punctual and much more in these 3 years. The academy makes sure that after you complete your training, you are all ready to serve your country at the best.
One thing is very clear, that you can survive in NDA only by your hard work, perseverance & dedication. You have to study hard & play harder.
NDA cadets Salary during training-
Once the cadet reaches NDA he starts earning Rs. 21000/- per month he actually authorized the salary of lt. flying officer or sub-lt. but this what he gets. Once commissioned the balance is paid to him as outstanding payment to his stipends.
What after completing the training of NDA?
when a cadet successfully passes from the NDA after completing the training period of 3 years. And now he has to choose any of the three armed forces and thus the 1 year of the training would spend in IMA, INA or AFA depending on what he has been selected for. After the training cadet would be posted as an officer in Indian Armed forces.
