Masood Azhar – the founder and leader of the Pakistan-based terrorist group named as Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). On May 1st, he was declared as a global terrorist by the UN.
The United Nation took this decision right after China lifted its hold on a proposal in order to blacklist the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed chief. Indian Jets planned to bomb a JeM camp at Balakot in Pakistan on February 26th after Pulwama attack in J&K in which around 50 personnel were killed. There was a report that Masood Azhar has died in the air strike, however, Pakistan said that he is being treated for renal failure.
On 14th February 2019, Pulwama district in Jammu & Kashmir, India was attacked by a vehicle-bound suicide bomber which results in the death of approach 50 Central Reserve Police Force personnel as well as the attacker. This attack was claimed by the Pakistan-based Islamist military group JeM. After this attack, the UK, the US, and France planned to ban Masood Azhar.
In the month of March, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and France had moved to make a decision and declared Masood Azhar as a global terrorist. Russia backed the proposal. China had blocked the proposal on technical grounds in the year 2016 and 2017 but agreed to the proposal on Wednesday.
Syed Akbaruddin – India’s ambassador to the UN has tweeted that “Big, small, all join together. Masood Azhar designated as a global terrorist in the @UN Sanctions list.” On the other hand, Pakistan said it would enforce the sanctions, but took aim at India. Mohammad Faisal, foreign office spokesman, said: “Pakistan maintains that terrorism is a menace to the world.” He also said that “it would be false to present the development as a victory for Indian and validation of its stance.”
Masood Azhar’s designation as an International terrorist will force Pakistan to take action against him. And, this will make Masood Azhar shut down his organization – JeM, as well as institutions, including terror camps and madrasas.
