INDIA’S FIRST NUCLEAR MISSILE TRACKING SHIP
India has achieved great heights in the field of Defence. Be it the induction of the Indian flagship INS VIKRAMADITYA in the Indian Navy the acquisition of the fighter aircraft RAFALE from France by the Indian Air Force, or the manufacture of the AK-203 variant of the Kalashnikov family of rifles for the Indian Army, all of the three armed forces are on full force to upgrade as well as provide the serving personnel with the best of the possible equipment, thus making the Indian armed forces self-sufficient which will not only reduce the dependency of India on other countries for import of advanced technicalities but will also generate a sense of self-efficiency within the minds of the already serving plus the future to be officers i.e. the defense aspirants.
The date 10th September 2021 proved to be a day of pride for the Indian armed forces, India launched its first nuclear missile tracking ship-INS DHRUV. It was commissioned by NSA AJIT DOVAL in Vishakhapatnam.
The ship will be jointly operated by NATIONAL TECHNICAL RESEARCH ORGANISATION(NTRO), DEFENCE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT ORGANISATION(DRDO), and the INDIAN NAVY.
INS Dhruv will be under Strategic Forces Command (SFC) and based in Eastern Naval Command of Indian Navy.
Earlier known as VC-11184 which was its shipyard designated yard number INS DHRUV is a research vessel and missile range instrumentation ship built by Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL).
Considering the specialties of the newly commissioned ship it can gather electronic intelligence and can be used to track missiles and satellites that will aid India’s strategic weapons and anti-ballistic missiles.
FITTINGS AND DESIGN OF INS DHRUV
Vik Sandvik Design India designed this dynamic ship that costs around ₹ 1,500 crores.
As per the technical aspects of this ship, it has a displacement of more than 10,000 tonnes. Talking about the measurements of INS Dhruv it comes with a length of 175 meters, a beam of 22 meters, a draught of 6 meters, and can attain a speed of 21 knots. Apart from the magnificent outer beauty that she carries, it is powered by two imported 9,000 kilowatts combined diesel and diesel (CODAD) configuration engines and three 1200 kilowatt auxiliary generators.
The ship also has a fitting of a primary X band and a secondary S-band active electronically scanned array(AESA) radar.
On top of all this ship has a long deck that provides sufficient space for the installation of multiple missile tracking antennas.
The ships compilation offers to carry 300 personnel, with a special team from the National technical research organization with a single helicopter
