Kargil Vijay Diwas 2022: Let’s remember the sacrifice of those brave soldiers who died in the line of duty to protect our nation. Salute to all the brave soldiers of the Indian Army who laid down their lives fighting for our nation. Jai Hind!
Every year Kargil Vijay Diwas is commemorated on the 26th of July and different events and programs are held across the country. Rajya Sabha pays tribute to its soldiers on this day at the Kargil War memorial in Drass.

Why is Kargil Vijay Diwas Important to India?

Therefore, 26th July 1999 marked India’s triumph in the Kargil War of 1999 over Pakistani infiltrators. Every year this day is celebrated with joy as India made a victorious act of recapturing the Himalayas and other higher altitudes around.
The gallant Indian soldiers recaptured several mountains, perched at high altitudes in the Himalayas, that were invaded by the Pakistani intruders in Kashmir. This day celebrates the victory and sacrifices of our brave soldiers.
Kargil war is one of the most significant wars ever fought. The war lasted from May to July 1999 in the Kargil Drass sector of Jammu and Kashmir.
Why was Kargil War Fought?
The reason for the Kargil war was that the Pakistani troops had unlawfully invaded the areas along the Line of Control (LoC). The combat between the two nations went on for three months continuously.
Also, Operation Vijay was launched to fight against the Pakistan army to release the regions occupied by them. They fought valiantly under extremely harsh conditions for the sake of our motherland. The indomitable spirit will stay with us forever motivating us to fight for our nation.
The Kargil war was a challenge for the Army as the Pakistani soldiers have positioned themselves in such a way that they had a strategic advantage against us. Still, the Indian Army managed to gather intel from local shepherds and ascertain their positions.
Tribute to the Indian Army Soldiers
Although, Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated in honor of the war heroes who won the war with courage and valor. their sacrifice for the nation will always be remembered and will keep us motivated.
Moreover, Union Defense Secretary, UP CM Yogi Adityanath, and Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann pay tribute to the Kargil jawans at the National war memorial and Chandigarh war memorial respectively. Pakistan Army was at the advantage of being at a higher altitude. Still, the Indian Army recaptured the areas along the LoC.
Also, Home Minister Amit Shah said a few lines on Kargil Vijay Diwas. Firstly, on this day prime minister and president of India commemorate the sacrifices made by our soldiers in this war. The official death toll of the war on the Indian side was 527.
The history behind the Kargil War
Since the Indo-Pak war of 1971, there have been many military conflicts. Both the countries conducted nuclear tests in 1998 which further escalated tensions. To calm the situation in February 1999, the two countries signed The Lahore Declaration, promising to provide a peaceful and bilateral solution to the Kashmir conflict.
Operation Safed Sagar
Therefore, the IAF for ground attack, used planes MiG-2Is, MiG-23s, MiG-27s, Jaguars, and the Mirage-2000. Mainly, for air interception with a secondary role of ground attack, MiG-21 was built. To attack the targets on the ground, MiG-23s and 27s were optimized. Several targets in Pakistan were attacked. Therefore, IAFβs MiG-21s and Mirage 2000 were extensively used in Operation Safed SagarΒ during this war.
Many bombs and rockets were used in the war. Around 2,50,000 shells, bombs, and rockets were fired. Approx. 5,000 artillery shells, mortar bombs, and rockets were fired daily from 300 guns, mortars, and MBRLs while 9,000 shells were fired the day Tiger Hill was regained.
Lastly, It is said that this was the only war after World War II in which such a large number of bombardments were carried out on the enemy army. Finally, India won a determined victory.
