PM Modi to inaugurate Strategic Atal Tunnel:
The Atal Bihari Vajpayee government had taken the decision to construct the strategic tunnel below the Rohtang Pass on June 3, 2000. The foundation stone for the access road to the South Portal was laid on May 26, 2002. Now the Modi Government decided to name the Rohtang Tunnel as Atal Tunnel in December 2019 to honor the former Prime Minister who died the previous year. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the strategically important all-weather Atal Tunnel, which reduces the distance between Manali and Leh by 46 km and the travel time by four to five hours, at Rohtang in Himachal Pradesh today.
Atal Tunnel is the longest highway tunnel in the world (above 10,000 feet). The 9.02 km long tunnel connects Manali to Lahaul-Spiti valley throughout the year, the PMO said, noting that the valley was earlier cut off for about six months every year due to heavy snowfall.
In the statement, The prime minister said that this tunnel is not only important to Himachal but also because it facilitates a connection to Ladakh. People who live in the mountains would know the significance of cutting down travel time by four or five hours. The tunnel has been designed for traffic density of 3,000 cars and 1,500 trucks per day, each of which can travel at a maximum speed of 80 kmph. The Atal tunnel will give new strength to India’s border infrastructure. It is an example of world-class border connectivity. There have been demands to improve border infrastructure but, for a long time, such projects either couldn’t get out of the planning stage or got stuck midway.
In an Statement said, The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) worked relentlessly to overcome major geological, terrain and weather challenges that included the most difficult stretch of the 587-metre Seri Nalah Fault Zone. The breakthrough from both ends was achieved on October 15, 2017.
The Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement that It is a horseshoe-shaped, single-tube, double lane tunnel with a roadway of eight metres and has an overhead clearance of 5.525 metres, and Named after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, construction on the tunnel took nearly a decade and cost around Rs 3,200 crore. The tunnel has been constructed with 15,000 tonnes of steel, of which the Steel Authority of India provided 9,000 tonnes.
Union Steel Minister said that this tunnel will be of great significance to the locals as well as for strategic movements. It will boost the connectivity of the Spiti Valley. This is an achievement considering the very challenging conditions of the construction site and weather.
The south portal of the tunnel is located at a distance of 25 km from Manali and at an altitude of 3,060 meters. The north portal (NP) is located near the Telling village in the Lahaul Valley at an altitude of 3,071 meters. This Tunnel is Sanjeevani Booti for Indian Armed forces that are deployed over there. Connectivity has a direct connection with development. The Prime minister also said in the statement that the Connectivity in border areas is directly related to security issues.
