The concept of an integrated theatre command was pioneered by the United States military in the year 1947. The United States set up five geographic tri-service commands to cover the globe. It now has 11 unified commands with the four geographic ones being Africa, Central, European, Indo-Pacific, Northern, Southern, and Space. Its functional commands include Cyber, Special Operations, Transportation, and Strategic.

Recently India appointed General Bipin Rawat as India’s first-ever Chief of Defense Staff whose responsibility it is to act as the principal point of contact between the tri-services and the executive leadership of the country. What is Integrated Theater Command:
An integrated theatre command is one that enables the pooling of resources of all three services under a single commander, towards securing a particular geographical area. A commander of an integrated theater command will have the resources of the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force in managing a national security threat over a particular geographical area. The commander can also carry out joint training while benefitting from the logistics of all three services.

Commands Centre of Indian Armed Forces:
There is a total of 17 commands today. In case of war, each Service Chief is expected to control the operations of his Service. To carry out his directions, he has functional commands headed by three-star rank Army Commanders or equivalent in the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force.
