Indian Coast guard commissions ship, Kanaklata Barua:
Kanaklata Barua, pride of Assam, one of the youngest martyrs during the Quit India Movement. Barua was 17 when she led the Mukti Bahini, a procession of freedom fighters to hoist the Tricolour at Gohpur police station on September 20, 1942. She was killed in a firing when police tried to stop them from unfurling the flag.
A fast patrol vessel named after Assamese freedom fighter Kanaklata Barua was commissioned in the Indian Coast Guard in Kolkata. The commissioning ceremony was of the ship was held at Coast Guard Headquarters in Delhi.
The Coast Guard had previously named a ship after her in 1997. The previous ICGS (Indian Coast Guard Service) Kanaklata Barua was decommissioned in 2017. In its 20-year tenure, it participated in many search and rescue missions seizing foreign fishing vessels and ventured into Indian waters for evacuation missions.
K Natarajan, the director-general of Indian Coast Guard on the occasion said: It is my honor to welcome this gathering to commission Indian Coast Guard ship Kanaklata Barua. Indian Coast Guard is the largest in the South-Asian region deals with dynamic situations and is vital in protecting the wide-ranging multi-interest of the nation. Even amid pandemic, maritime security continues to be a challenging task.
About the Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV):
This Fast Patrol Vessel ships are designed to achieve speeds exceeding 34 knots with an endurance of more than 1,500 nautical miles. The 49-metre-long ship is designed to carry one high-speed rigid inflatable boat (RIB) and one Gemini boat for swift boarding, and search and rescue operations. The entire design of the FPVs has been developed in- house by GRSE as per requirements specified by the Indian Coast Guard. These ships are also fitted with 40/60 Gun as the main armament and have improved habitability features with fully air-conditioned modular accommodation for 35 personnel.
