How to join technical branches in Indian Army

Serving Indian Armed Forces is the cherished dream of lacs of youths but only some of them make their way in that. Indian Army is one such organization which not only offers a job but also provides an opportunity to young and energetic men and women to pursue their interests and hobbies as a career. Being an engineer is now became a common trend but Equally Indian Army provides golden opportunity to youths to opt Indian Army as an officer in Technical Branches. In this blog we will unbox some of the technical entries which are available for youths of the Nation.

TECHNICAL ENTRY SCHEME

Technical Entry Scheme is one of the entry which provides direct entry to 12th passed young chaps to the technical branches of the Indian Army. Every 6 months Indian Army notifies 90 seats for 12th passed students to who are eligible as well as interested. After getting selected candidates are given military training for 11 months at Officers Training Academy (Gaya) and 3 years B.Tech course at one of the technical college of Indian Army. Let us find out some of tye basic details of this entry.

Nationality-  A candidate must either be : (i) A citizen of India, or (ii) A subject of Bhutan, or (iii) A subject of Nepal, or (iv) a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 1st of January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India or (v) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India. Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (ii), (iii), (iv) and (v) above, shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility issued by Govt of India is necessary, may be admitted to the examination provisionally subject to the necessary certificate being given to him by the Govt before declaration of result by SSB/joining training.

Vacancies- 90 seats are notified in every course. Vacancies are provisional and can be changed depending on the training capacity at the training Academy for this course. The vacancies are subject to increase/decrease keeping the organizational requirement at the point of time.

Age Limit-  16 ½ to 19 ½ years. A candidate must not be below 16½ years and above 19½ years on the first day of the month in which the course is commencing.The date of birth accepted by the office is that entered in the Matriculation or Secondary School Leaving certificate or in the certificate recognized by an Indian University as equivalent to Matriculation or in an extract from a Register of Matriculates maintained by a University which extract must be certified by the proper authority of the University or in the Higher Secondary or an equivalent examination certificate. No other document relating to age will be accepted. The expression Matriculation/ Higher Secondary Examination Certificate in this part of the instruction includes the alternative certificate mentioned above.

Educational Qualification-

Only those candidates who have passed 10+2 Examination or its equivalent with a minimum aggregate of 70% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics from recognized education boards are eligible to apply for this entry. Eligibility condition for calculating PCM % of various state /central boards will be based on marks obtained in Class XII only.

Selection procedureAfter shortlisting candidates will be called for SSB Interview in one of the Selection centre of Indian Army.

Form AvailabilityTechnical Entry Scheme is notified twice in a year probably in May/Jun & Nov/Dec.

SSB Interview SSB Interview is conducted in the months of Sep/Oct/Nov & Mar/Apr/May every year.

Training- Total training will be 5 years, Details are as under:

  • Basic Military Training: 1 year (Officer Training Academy Gaya).
  • Technical Training: (i) Phase-I (Pre Commission Training): 3 Years (CME Pune or MCTE Mhow or MCEME Secunderabad),

(ii) Phase-II (Post Commission Training): 1 year at CME Pune or MCTE Mhow or MCEME Secunderabad.

 SSC-TECH (MEN & WOMEN)

SSC TECH is also one such entry which provides direct entry to young engineers of 20 to 27 years of age group. This entry is for male and female both. Just like TES Course here a candidate is also supposed to be Technical Graduate or Final year student. This entry is notified twice in a year and vacancies are almost 150 to 170. Nationality- A candidate must either be : (i) A citizen of India, or (ii) A subject of Bhutan, or (iii) A subject of Nepal, or (iv) a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 1st of January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India or (v) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India. Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (ii), (iii), (iv) and (v) above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by Government of India. Certificate of eligibility will however not be necessary in the case of candidates who are Gorkha subjects of Nepal.

Vacancies-  Indian Army notifies 150 to 175 seats for men and around 20 for women.

Age Limit- Age Limit: – (i) SSC(T)-49 Men and SSC(T)-20 Women:- 20 to 27 years as on date notified in the advertisement. (ii) SSCW(Non Tech)(Non UPSC)- For Widows of Defence Personnel only (with four years age relaxation). 19 to 29 years NOTE-1: The date of birth accepted by the office is that entered in the Matriculation or an equivalent examination certificate. NOTE -2: No other document relating to age will be accepted and no subsequent request for its change will be considered or granted.

Educational Qualification-

Candidates who have passed Engineering Degree course or are in the final year of engineering course are eligible to apply. The candidates studying in the final year examination of Degree Course should be able to produce the Engineering Degree within 12 weeks from the date of commencement of training at OTA. Such candidates will be inducted on Additional Bond Basis for recovery of the cost of training at OTA as notified from time to time as well as stipend and pay & allowances paid, in case they fail to produce the requisite Degree Certificate within the specified time.

Selection procedure

After shortlisting candidates will be called for SSB Interview in one of the Selection centre of Indian Army.

Form Availability SSC TECH entry is notified twice in a year probably in the months of Jan /Feb & Jul/Aug

SSB Interview– SSB Interview is conducted in the months of May/Jun & Oct/Nov

Training

(a) Selected candidates will be detailed for training at Officers’ Training Academy, Chennai according to their position in the final order of merit, engineering stream-wise upto the number of vacancies available at the time.

(b) Duration of Training- 49 weeks.

Apart from SSC Tech Entry Technical Graduate Course (TGC) and University Entry Scheme (UES) were also some of the good entries but due to some reasons these two entries are discontinued and number of seats are merged with SSC TECH Entry.
