Recently, The Defense India Startup Challenge (DISC 4) has been launched by the Defense Minister of India during the IDEX event, This launch featuring the initiatives aimed at expanding the horizons of Innovations for Defence Excellence ecosystem. The defense minister Stated that this is very time an atmosphere has been created in the country when different stakeholders have been brought together to push for innovations in the defense sector. In order to further strengthen the defense system and make it self- reliant the participation of the private sector is also crucial. The Defense Minister congratulated all stakeholders, including those in the Ministry of Defense for creating such an environment where participants from various sectors are coming together to promote innovation in defense.
Types of Startups under DISC 4 Challenge:
Under the DISC 4, eleven challenges from Armed forces, OFB & DPSUs were made open to startups, innovators, MSMEs in order to provide their innovative ideas on technologies. These technologies could have their application in the defence sector. The eleven challenges include:
- Autonomous Underwater Swarm Drones.
- AI-based Satellite Image Analysis.
- Predictive, Preventive & Prescriptive Machine Monitoring.
- Reduction of RCS of Naval Warships.
- Super Resolution for Improving Spatial Resolution.
- Computer Generated Targets for Virtual Training.
- Target Detection in Chaff Environment.
- Remote Real-Time In-Flight Health Monitoring of Aircrew.
- MF-TDMA based Wideband SATCOM Modem.
- Prediction and forecasting of atmospheric visibility.
- Foliage Penetration Radar.

Defense Minister Stated, We neither have a dearth of talent nor of demand for it. In the absence of a common platform, they were not able to meet up at a commonplace. iDEX platform has succeeded in filling this gap. In the last three rounds of DISC, over 700 startups and innovators had participated. Out of these 58 participants, were chosen for innovation grants under ‘Support for Prototype and research kickstart.

He also said, yesterday the government launched the Defense Acquisition procedure 2020 which seeks to encourage the private industry to participate in the defense sector.
