We know that the Indian Army is divided into different groups, each with its own special insignia and uniforms. These insignia and uniforms help us tell one group apart from another. You can easily see these insignia on the soldiers’ hats. These insignia are very important because they show the proud history and identity of each group. Each group also has its own flags, honors from battles they’ve fought, special customs, traditions, and rituals. In this blog we shall know about Insignia of Indian Army Regiments.

Following is the list of Indian Army Regiments and their Insignia
- BRIGADE OF GUARDS:
The Brigade of Guards is India’s first infantry regiment that includes people from all classes. It currently has 21 battalions. Their symbol is a Garuda, which is an eagle. This symbol represents strength, speed, and martial skills.
2. THE PARACHUTE REGIMENT:
This is the part of the Indian Army that specializes in airborne operations, as we discussed in earlier blogs. Their emblem features an open parachute. To be more specific, the emblem shows an open parachute with wings spreading out from a circle, and there’s a dagger on top of the parachute.
3. MECHANISED INFANTRY:
This regiment gives infantry soldiers more mobility by using vehicles. Their symbol is the BMP1, which is a type of vehicle. The emblem shows a rifle bayonet attached to the BMP1, symbolizing the combination of human and machine power.
4. PUNJAB REGIMENT:
The Punjab Regiment has a rich history in the Indian Army. It’s unique because it’s the only regiment in the world with a naval symbol. Their emblem shows a galley with oars and a sail. They were awarded this symbol in 1824 because of their readiness to serve overseas.
5. RAJPUTANA RIFLES:
The Rajputana Rifles regiment uses a medieval Rajput weapon called a Katar and a bugle as their symbol. The Katar was used by wealthy Rajputs, so it represents their wealth and status. This regiment is the oldest and most senior in the Indian Army.
6. SIKH REGIMENT:
The Sikh Regiment uses the Chakra as their emblem. This symbol comes from the Khalsa army, which used a Chakra in combat. The Chakra surrounds a lion, representing the name “Singh” that every Sikh carries.
7. MADRAS REGIMENT:
The Madras Regiment is the oldest in the Indian Army. They use an elephant symbol as their emblem, given to them after the Assaye Battle. This symbol represents their fierce fighting skills.
8. MARATHA LIGHT INFANTRY:
This regiment is known for its skirmish-style combat. They have a symbol with crossed swords, a bugle, cords, and a shield. It represents their light infantry tactics controlled by bugle signals.
9. THE GORKHA RIFLES:
This regiment has a storied history and is famous for its bravery. Their emblem features crossed Khukri knives, a traditional Gurkha weapon. This symbolizes the strength of Gurkha soldiers who could use their Khukris to sabotage the enemy.

10. JAT REGIMENT:
In the 1920s, this regiment held the ninth position in the army’s hierarchy. So, they use the Roman numeral 9 as their symbol. It also includes a bugle, signifying their readiness to follow orders.
11. DOGRA REGIMENT:
The Dogra Regiment’s soldiers pray to Goddess Durga at their centers. That’s why their symbol is a tiger, which is associated with Goddess Durga and symbolizes courage.
12. KUMAON REGIMENT:
This regiment is highly decorated, with two PVCs (Param Vir Chakras). Their emblem features a demi-rampant lion, taken from the coat of arms of Sir Henry Russell’s family.
13. ASSAM REGIMENT:
Assam is home to the one-horned rhinoceros, found nowhere else in the world. The regiment’s emblem is this one-horned rhinoceros, symbolizing their toughness, aggressiveness, determination, and martial qualities.
14. BIHAR REGIMENT:
The Bihar Regiment’s emblem is the Ashokan Lion. This symbol was chosen because Bihar’s history is closely linked to Ashoka, the great ruler of the Mauryan Empire.
15. NAGA REGIMENT:
The Naga Regiment is the youngest in the Indian Army and is also known as the Head Hunters. Their emblem includes the Mithun, a prestigious animal from the northeastern region. The Naga Regiment’s symbol consists of a spear (Dah) and the Mithun.
16. GARHWAL RIFLES:
The Garhwal Rifles is one of the most highly decorated infantry regiments in the Indian Army. Their emblem features a Maltese cross with the Ashokan emblem.
17. JAMMU AND KASHMIR RIFLES:
The Jammu and Kashmir Rifles originally belonged to the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir before becoming a part of India. Their regimental symbol is an oval that encompasses the sun, which is the state emblem, with the Sanskrit inscription “Ever-victorious in war.”
18. RAJPUT REGIMENT:
The Rajput Regiment is made up of soldiers mainly from the Rajput, Gujrar, and Yadav communities. Their emblem features a pair of katars (a type of knife) with three Ashoka leaves on each side.
19. GRENADIERS:
The Grenadiers were originally part of the Bombay Army but later became part of the Indian Army. They are known for their significant victories, including Tiger Hill and Tololing during the Kargil conflict. Their emblem includes a brass grenade with the white horse of Hanover.
