Corps of Military Police (CMP) is the military police day of Indian Army trained to handle POW (Prisoners of War). They also handle basic telecommunication equipment such as telephone exchange along with traffic regulating.
They are easy to be identified, their red berets are way too enough to make them distinguishable from the rest of the forces.
Along with being red heads, they wear white lanyards and belts, a black brassard with the letters MP imprinted in red.
In maintaining a high standard of discipline of troops by army formations they play an important role by assisting them. They also look after the fact that various rules and regulations aren’t breached. They also assist in preservation of high morale of all ranks.
18th day of October,1947 marked the shedding of the historical connections with British by the Corps of Indian Military Police (CIMP). It was re designated as the “Corps of Military Police”. Thereby this day is celebrated as the Corps Raising Day.
After India got Independence, the Corps served with vigour and valour. The Corps of Military Police originated in the days preceding WW II.
The year 2021 marks the 82nd Raising Day of the Corps of Military Police.
As for the history of CMP, the first section was raised in July 1939, and was known by the name Force 4 Provost Unit. This was initially the part of the 4th Indian Infantry Division, which was also the first Indian formation inducted in World War II. This provost section was raised with soldiers from the 7th and 11th Cavalry Regiment. The raising date recorded as on 28th August,1939 and this unit served in campaigns of North America and Burma during the Second World War.
After this newly formed unit performed successful operations, British government of India formerly sanctioned the formation of Corps of Indian Military Police on July 7th in the year 1942.
