Gallantry Awards of India 2019
President Ram Nath Kovind conferred gallantry awards 2019 to armed forces personnel to showcase their bravery, courage and devotion to duty at a defence investiture ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhawan.
During the ceremony, President awarded two Kirti Chakras and an equal number of Shaurya Chakras to soldiers who laid down their lives in the Indian Army operations in J&K and the Northeast. Along with this, the president of India also conferred a Shaurya Chakra to 16-year-old Irfan Ramazan Sheikh who thwarted a militant attack on his home in the year 2017.
Among various gallantry awards, the Kirti Chakras were also conferred to Sowar Vijay Kumar of the Armoured Corps and Constable Pradip Kumar Panda of the Central Reserve Police Force who died in two separate operations in J&K.
The Shaurya Chakras under gallantry awards were awarded to Rifleman Jaiprakash Oraon and Sepoy Ajay Kumar for their role in counter terror operations in Manipur as well as J&K respectively. The same award was also conferred to CRPF Deputy Commandant Kuldeep Singh Chahar, CRPF Assistant Commandant Zile Singh, Havildar Kul Bahadur Thapa, Major Imliakum Keitzar, Major Pawan Kumar, Rifleman Rathva Lilesh Bhai, Naib Subedhar Anil Kumar Dahiya, Captain Abhay Sharma, Havildar Jaweed Ahmad Bhat, Lieutenant Colonel Arjun Sharma, Major Rohit Lingwal and Lieutenant Colonel Vikrant Prasher to showcase their gallantry during Indian Army operations in J&K and the Northeast.
On the other hand, under gallantry awards, Kirti Chakra is awarded for conspicuous gallantry otherwise than in the face of the enemy”, whereas Shaurya Chakra is awarded for “gallantry otherwise in the face of the enemy”.
In addition, the President of India also awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM) to 13 senior officers of the three armed forces. He also conferred the Uttam Yuddh Seva Medal (UYSM) to two Army officers, including Lieutenant General Anil Kumar Bhatt. Currently, Anil Kumar Bhatt is the Military Secretary at the Army Headquarters. He is also the general officer commanding (GoC) of Srinagar-based 15 corps, that takes care of anti-militancy operations in the Valley.
Ati Vishisht Seva Medal was awarded to twenty-six officers of the three armed forces. The PVSM is awarded to officers for “distinguished service of the most exceptional order”. Additionally, the UYSM is awarded to officers for “distinguished service of an exceptional order during war/ conflict/ hostilities” and AVSM is awarded to armed forces personnel for “distinguished service of an exceptional order”.
