President confers gallantry awards to Armed Forces Personnel

Gallantry Awards 2018: President of India – Ram Nath Kovind conferred the Kirti Chakra and Shaurya Chakra to Major David Manlun and Major Satish Dahiya. Both of them lost their lives while fighting with terrorists in Nagaland and J&K. He presented Shaurya Chakra to the family members of Major Satish Dahiya. Major Dahiya killed three terrorists in Bandipora till his martyrdom.

In addition to the Gallantry Awards 2018, the Shaurya Chakra was also awarded to Naik Chandra Singh, Sergeant Milind Khairnar, Constable Manzoor Naik of the J&K Police, and Corporal Nilesh Kumar Nayan. Malun lost his life while fighting with militants in northern Nagaland, but eliminated three of them before succumbing to his injuries.

Moreover, in a tweet, the President of India said that “During search operation for 3 terrorists in a village, Maj Dahiya isolated the suspected house by putting a tight cordon, placing himself at the likely escape route. Militants suddenly rushed out, firing indiscriminately. He was hit on his chest but killed all the militants”.

According to the Gallantry Awards 2018, the Kirti Chakra as well as Shaurya Chakra was awarded for “gallantry in presence of the enemy”. Additionally, the Kirti Chakra was awarded to CRPF Commandant Chetan Kumar Cheeta as well as Major Vijayant Bist of the J&M Light Infantry. CRPF Commandant Chetan Kumar Cheeta was injured in an operation against terrorist in Bandipora district of J&K. During the operation, he lost his eye. After the award ceremony, Cheeta said that “I fought with my wife so that I could get back to work”.

The President of India also awarded Gallantry Awards 2018 – Shaurya Chakra to Assistant Commandant (AC) Chandan Kumar from the CRPF, and Assistant Assault Commander P Trinadha Rao and Senior Commando Chikkam G V Ramachandra Rao of the Andhra Police for fighting Maoists.

The Shaurya Chakra in Gallantry Awards 2018 was also awarded to Maj Rohit Shukla, Gunner Rishi Kumar Ray, Maj Abhinav Shukla, Sepoy Arif Khan and Lance Naik Badher Hussian, Havildar Mubarak Ali. On the other hand, The Param Vishisht Seva Medal was awarded to 14 top officers from the Indian Army, Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force. In addition to this, the medal was also awarded to officers for “distinguished service of the most exceptional order”.

Apart from this, The Uttam Yuddh Seva Medal was awarded to Lt Gen Ajae Kumar Sharma for “distinguished service of an exceptional order during war/ conflict/ hostilities”, whereas Ati Vishisht Seva Medal was awarded to 22 senior officers of the three armed forces, including Indian Army, Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force. Among those awarded the AVSM was Maj Gen Madhuri Kanitkar, the only woman officer among the awardees. Kanitkar is a paediatric nephrologist who is the first woman Dean of the Armed Forces Medical College.
