What is the India Water Impact Summit 2018?

December 5th, 2018. The third India Water Impact Summit was held in New Delhi and inaugurated by the Union Minister for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Shri Nitin Gadkari. The summit was jointly organized by National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) and the Centre for Ganga River Basin Management and Studies (cGanga). This was a three-day summit starting from the 5th of December till the 7th of December.

The India Water Impact Summit is an annual function in which stakeholders gather and discuss about the model solutions for the country’s water-related problems. The primary mission for this year was restoring of the river Ganga basin to a condition characteristic of a younger landscape. A multi-country dialogue was set up to showcase the latest technologies, researches, innovations, funding models from India and Abroad, and policy framework. All key decision makers responsible for the changes that were to be made in the banks of the river Ganga and a number of Indian Central Government Ministers were present on the India Water Impact Summit 2018. The efforts may take various forms, which included data collection, hydrology, e-flows, agriculture, waste-water, etc.

The India Water Impact Summit 2018 mainly focused on the following topics-

  • Technology and Innovation – The pilot/demonstration programme also known as the Environment Technology Verification (ETV) process were to be implemented. This provided a platform for technology and innovation companies from around the world to show and display their ideas for addressing the problems related to the river basin. 
  • Spotlight on 5 states: Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Delhi, and Bihar. The objective is to present the efforts and works going on inside each state.
  • Ganga Financing Forum: The India Water Impact Summit 2018 also introduced the inaugural Ganga Financing Forum that brought a number of institutions to a single knowledge, information, and partnership objective. The Hybrid Annuity Model had summarized the places created by mankind of water and waste-water treatment in India. All tenders had been successfully bidden away and financial closures had been achieved. Adding to it, the Government was encouraging the development of smaller waste-water treatment projects. The Financing Forum brought together, financial institutions and investors interested in Namami Gange programmes.

More than 50 Central, State and municipal Government representatives participated in the India Water Impact Summit. Also, 200 National and international representatives from 50 countries participated in the summit. Topics such as Afforestation, biodiversity, global eco-system, water/river management plans were taken up in the summit.
